As primary campaigns heat up this summer, New Hampshire has too. This year promises to be the hottest year on record for the Granite State.

According to UNH’s Carsey Institute, more than half of those surveyed recently said that “climate change is happening now and is caused mainly by human activities.”

As New Hampshire experiences record heat, Republican senatorial candidates pointedly dodge the critical issue of greenhouse gas pollution by claiming that climate change is not “proven.”

While Republican primary candidates carefully avoid the issue, UNH scientists continue to provide well documented, factual evidence that greenhouse gas pollution is putting our economy, our environment and our own health at great risk.

No matter that New Hampshire can expect less snow cover, more frequent droughts and low-rain summers due to man-made climate change: Solutions go begging, while candidates bicker.

So far, none of the Republican primary candidates has presented any fresh, concrete proposals on how to stem carbon pollution, promote clean energy or create more green jobs and businesses — issues of vital concern to all New Hampshire voters, including Republicans.

No matter who wins in November, the adverse effects of climate pollution on New Hampshire’s forests, coastlines, wildlife and agriculture are not going to disappear.

Rather than continue personal attacks, let’s hope that all candidates, Republican and Democrat, are mature enough to give serious attention to climate solutions.

During this fall’s campaign, voters should not allow its candidates for high public office to continue to fiddle while New Hampshire continues to burn.
